Who I am: My name is Clive, I'm in my third year of undergraduate study in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and I'm based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. I'm part of the Blue Tutors agency. You can view my CV here (PDF).
What I offer: I offer both home tuition and correspondence tuition, depending on your proximity to Harrogate. The level of mathematics tuition that I offer is that of A-level Mathematics and Further Maths, or equivalent. This includes, for example, IB Diploma SL/HL Maths, SQA Higher and Advanced Higher, and FSMQ Additional Maths.
My philosophy: Having studied mathematics for the vast majority of my life to date, I have found that maths is much easier to learn when you really understand what is going on behind the symbols and numbers. Visualisation and intuition are key to developing ability and skill in maths and, more importantly, enjoying it. Often, the mathematics that is taught in the classroom misses out these important aspects, leaving students confused, bored and frustrated. My method is to work with students to identify the aspects of mathematics that they find difficult, and help them gain an understanding by means of going through examples, drawing analogies with the real world, and discussing the underlying motivations behind what is being studied. My teaching style is casual and interactive, and my ultimate goal is not only to help students understand what they do, but also to enjoy it.
Fees: My standard rate is £25 per hour for home tuition or £20 per hour for correspondence tuition. The first session is half price. If money is tight, let me know — I am happy to lower my fees for those who really need it.
